Introduction

Digital transformation is high on the agenda for most organisations, with the drive to improve operations and create a more seamless customer experience. However, it can be a double-edged sword, as the adoption of new systems and automated processes have the potential to introduce more cyber security risks and vulnerabilities.

The business threat of a cyber attack today is huge.

39% of UK businesses have suffered a cyber attack in the last 12 months, according to the UK government. Furthermore, by 2025, cybercrime is expected to cost businesses worldwide a total of £7 trillion every year. If an attack is successful, the consequences can be severe and far-reaching:

Financial: in 2021, the average cost of a breach reached a record level of $4.24 million - an amount that can have a significant impact on the bottom line of even major international businesses.
Regulatory: legal requirements like GDPR place heavy sanctions and penalties to businesses found guilty of a breach.
Reputational: any major breach will naturally attract publicity for the wrong reasons, which will impact customer, partner and supplier confidence that a business can be trusted to handle sensitive information.
