Outcomes we enable:
In early 2020, British Steel were acquired by China’s leading steelmaker and multinational conglomerate, Jingye Group. Following this acquisition, an assessment was carried out to identify business improvements. This included a review of their current IT contracts, which highlighted that British Steel had a data centre service that they had no control of.
British Steel’s data was spread across two data centres with a significant amount of legacy IBM equipment in use. This data centre service was mission-critical to the efficient running of the business, however British Steel had no transparency into what the service consisted of and they were at risk of paying more than they should be. There was a need to review and migrate data and to regain control of their infrastructure to support future transformation.
They were looking for a partner to support them in migrating the existing data centre service into their own greenfield data centre environment. Jingye Group wanted to bring control and management of IT in-house. SCC were chosen to deliver this data centre migration project.
Our skills, knowledge and experience of developing tailored bids was key to SCC winning the British Steel contract. The solution for British Steel included the purchase of a new data centre and a combination of the right technologies and vendor support to build this out. This included the supply of integral technologies including servers, networking and security. SCC worked with our vendor partners Nutanix, Aruba, Veritas, Palo Alto and IBM to build the correct solution for the customer.
SCC’s Professional Services team worked closely with British Steel to ensure we could meet their needs. Utilising previous experience in data centre migrations, the SCC team proposed a number of technology solutions until one was found to meet their requirement. This previous experience enabled SCC to de-risk the migration for the customer. This highlighted the importance of the solution delivery and so the team planned for migrating the data centre environment in the least disruptive way possible, to prevent interruptions to British Steel’s day-to-day production.
We have replicated the disaster recovery that was built into their previous environment and created a new back up solution for both new and existing legacy environments, covered by Veritas. Our strong vendor partner relationships helped us to mitigate supply chain issues which would have affected the delivery schedule for this project.
British Steel now have a platform that they can use to manage their own data centre environment an build out in the future as and when they need to.
